Powerful is genetic conditioning
that responds to a babe's muted whimper,
jolts a comatose mind to life, pricks ears
on cries of a demanding off-spring.
Unlike cats, with shrewd purrs,
human cubs are naive dears.
Still, in moments winking short,
the fog before their eyes clears,
a glimmer within stirs,
for a gasping moment, instincts shift from animal
to pure sentient.
The above poem is for the NaPoWriMo2022. Day 17. I finally got some barely adequate sleep.
